January 23, 2007

Meeting convened at 1935. All officers present or accounted for.

Minutes of last meeting accepted as published in last newsletter. Report of Paymaster accepted as read, subject to audit.

There was a long discussion regarding the detachment’s contribution to the Marines Helping Marines Program, which culminated with Marine Casey suggesting that the MHM Mission Statement be posted on the website.

Sick or in distress:
Marine Bobby Flock reported that she had visited with detachment charter member Donald Yowell, who is gravely ill and in ICU at Montgomery General Hospital. (Note: Marine Yowell subsequently passed away. Please see Jr. Vice Commandant’s Message.)
Marine Harold Mazmanian has been feeling tired lately and the intense cold has been bothering him.
Marine Bill Brooks is undergoing rehabilitation and hopes to make the next detachment meeting.

Committee Reports:

Scholarship: Chair Dennis Starliper reported that he has been in contact with school guidance counselors. We will need detachment letterhead stationery and Marine Kippenbrock volunteered to create it.

Toys for Tots: It was reported that the detachment collected over 800 toys for this worthy endeavor. Bravo Zulu to all those who worked so hard to make our contribution a success!

Marine for Life: NTR

MCL License Plates: Please contact Commandant Oliver if you wish to obtain MCL plates for your automobile or motorcycle.

Adopt-A-Highway: Please see detachment activities schedule for next road clean-up date. You must sign a waiver before participating, so please be sure to see Saki prior to participating.

Birthday Ball: Planning is in progress for a Department-wide ball.

Rifle and Pistol Teams: Applications for the Department of PA pistol match on June 1-3, 2007 are available from Marine Kippenbrock. See him ASAP if you wish to shoot.

Newsletter: Marine Rotondo again reminded all that reports and articles are due on the next Tuesday following the meeting. Articles and reminiscences are welcome.

Old Business:

Marines Helping Marines: It was decided that we will make a decision at the next meeting about disposition of monies collected whether or not we receive clarification of alleged difficulties with the program.

New Business: None

Announcements:
The National MCL Auxiliary is holding a raffle with the winning tickets to be drawn at the Mid-Winter conference. The detachment voted to purchase tickets in our name.

February 27, 2007 Detachment Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 1930 with 14 Marines on deck. All officers present/accounted for.

Correspondence: We received a copy of a Morning Report for 1st PLT India Co. prepared by the sender, Sgt. J.M. “Mike” Jones and our namesake, SSgt. Karl G. Taylor, Sr. while they were on Hill 881S during the siege of Khe Sanh. It would appear that this giant of a man of heroic proportions in both size and courage had a rather impish sense of humor. The copies will be available for viewing at the next detachment meeting.
We also received a confirmation certificate that the inscribed detachment brick will be emplaced at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The inscription will read:

Also received was a Life Membership application from Marine Bob Banks.
The VFW 8097 Auxiliary sent us a card thanking the detachment for our donation to the post.

Report of the Paymaster was accepted pending audit by voice vote.

Sick and In Distress: Marine Harold Mazmanian has been bothered with back spasms. Marine Chuck Casey had shoulder surgery and is recovering well.

Officers Reports:
Commandant: Reported that he attended the memorial service for deceased member Donald Yowell and related that we learned that he had been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained at Iwo Jima.
Jr. Vice Commandant: Has visited Bethesda NNMC four times and Walter Reed AMC once since last meeting.

Committee Reports:
Scholarship: Three applications have been received. Applications are on-line at the detachment website.
Rifle/Pistol Teams: We have filled 3 teams and we will shoot on the Second Relay.
Toys for Tots: NTR
Marine for Life: NTR
Marine Corps Birthday Ball: The Department has contracted for a hotel near BWI Airport for a Department of Maryland ball. There will also be a National Ball in Fairfax, VA again this year. DTF.
MCL License Plates: Contact Commandant Oliver to obtain MCL plates for your vehicle.
Road Clean-up: Next road clean up scheduled for April 28. Contact Saki if interested in participating.
Golf Tournament: The Ft. Meade Golf Course has been secured for the June 8 event. Menu is set. Marine Kippenbrock is working on getting Geico as an anchor sponsor. It is imperative that all detachment members work on obtaining sponsors, program ads, and golfers. Flyers and sponsor forms are available at the meetings and on the detachment website.
Newsletter: Newsletter editor Marine Rotondo admonished all that any reports or articles not submitted by the Tuesday following the detachment meeting will not be published in the newsletter.

Old Business:
If your dues have not yet been paid, please do so ASAP. If you have MCL tags and you have not paid your dues, the MVA will demand that you return your license plates to them.
Ron Short, National Coordinator of the Marines Helping Marines Program, passed out copies of and explained the by-laws of the program, especially that all expenditures must be vouchered before more funds are expended. Following this, the detachment decided that all was well with the program and donated $4,443.82 from last year’s golf tournament to the program.

New Business: A motion to make a donation to purchase exercise equipment for the Marines aboard the USS New York was tabled pending receipt of more information.

Good of the League:
Raffle tickets for an M-1 Garand rifle are being sold by the Salinas, CA detachment. See Commandant.
Detachment voted to expend $25 to purchase a camera tripod for detachment use.
Marine Severn advised that the Department of Maryland is requesting $100 from each detachment to fund the hospitality suite at the Department Convention in Ocean City in May. We also need to solicit ads for the convention booklet.
Marine Joe Roman was nominated for Department Marine of the Year.
There were no nominations for detachment officers. If you are interested in holding detachment office next year, please arrange to be nominated at the next meeting.

The next detachment dinner at the VFW will be on March 9.

April 24, 2007

1915: Meeting called to order. All present were qualified to remain. All officers were present except for Sr. Vice Patrick Starliper.

Guest: Earl Parker, Ed Ross, and Jack Severn.

Minutes of previous meeting were accepted as posted.

Correspondence: Request for donations from the Red Night Fire Fighters Motorcycle Club to help support troops overseas.

Motion made and accepted to send one hundred dollars to the Red Nights.

Paymasters report: Motion to accept paymaster report made and accepted pending audit.

Sick and distressed: Report on Bob Walton’s heart surgery given by Marine Bobbie Flock. After 11 hours of surgery, he is resting well.

Old Business: Marine Kippenbrock and Casey will be repairing the horseshoe pit at the VFW post in Jessup.

Checking Account: Signature change on the SSGT. Karl G. Taylor checking account will be as follows: Commandant Charles A. Casey and Paymaster Dennis Graham will be the authorizing signatures.

New Business: Motion made by Marine Kippenbrock to sponsor Mimi Kippenbrock in the Avon Walk for the Cure (Cancer). Motion was accepted to give one hundred dollars.

Good of the League: Motion to purchase one hundred dollars in raffle tickets from MCL Convention in Ocean City. All proceeds from raffle tickets will go towards SSGT. Karl G. Taylor Scholarship fund. Motion made and accepted for the detachment to pay the registration fees for our representatives at the MCL convention. The follow members will represent our detachment; Kevin Oliver, Joe Roman and Mike Betts.

Announcements: Kevin Oliver thanked everyone for the support they had given him during his past two years as commandant.

Pistol Match at Fort Indian Town Gap: Pistol match shooters will meet after the meeting to discuss the shoot.
Scholarship program: Two applications were received for the scholarship to date.
Fundraiser: Marine Joe Roman will be giving us info on the hotdog sales, dates, etc.
Golf tournament: Coordinated by Marine Casey and Marine Kippenbrock. All others helping will meet at 0615, Marine Joe Roman will pick up car from Apple Ford. VFW Post donated $200.00.
Bobbie Flock offered to pay for a person who cannot afford to play or contribute a $50.00 donation. We also have openings for several golfers that would be covered on corporate sponsors who have paid and will not be sending golfers.

Report of special committees:
Unfinished Business: Convention report was given by Marine Mike Betts.
Certificate of Meritorious Service Award presented to the SSgt Karl G. Taylor for the period of May 2006 to May 2007. Authorization to wear the Department Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon by each member of the entity to which this award was made.
Mike Betts was awarded the Chapel of Four Chaplains award.
Motion to reimburse Chuck for one hundred dollars. Funds used for a sign at the Anne Arundel Detachment Golf Tournament.

Good of the League: Marine Guy Hall (Anne Arundel Detachment) donated a Devil Dog Flag.

Report of standing committees: Scholarship committee selected two students. July 24 will be the presentation of the scholarship.
Jane Starliper of the Auxiliary will be doing food. Offer of additional help will be welcomed.

Report of special committees:
Toys-for-Tots needs a new coordinator to head up for this year.
Road cleanup for June 30 to meet at 0800.

Unfinished business:
Hot dogs sales can no longer be done at Wal-Mart.
A new location is needed or we need ideas for a new fund raiser. We are open to suggestions.

New Business:
Information for working a booth at the Howard County Fairgrounds for recruitment reasons. Motion made, and second for $60.00. Motion accepted for cost of booth.
A motion for $100.00 was made and accepted to pay for refreshments at the scholarship awards ceremony.

Good of League: Update of convention by Kevin Oliver. The convention paid for itself from fundraisers.

Announcements:
Doug Putt’s church will be having a military appreciation day on Sunday July 1, 2007. Details at the end of meeting.
The VFW Post will be having a crab feast in July. Details to follow.

Report of Paymaster: Given by paymaster Dennis Graham. Motion to accept pending audit by Kevin Oliver. Seconded by Frank Kippenbrock.

Report of any member or member’s family sick or in distress: Don Downer was in the hospital. Chaplain sent out a card. Bob Walton is still having complications. Dennis Starliper’ brother passed away due to complication from surgery.

Report of officers: Commandant will be the host family for the Marine Corps mascot.

Report of standing committees:
Kevin Oliver will head up our cake cutting ceremony or join up with another detachment for the Marine Birthday.
Scholarship committee has nothing at this time.
National Ball will be on November 10 at Fairview.
Fundraising committee has nothing going on at this time. We would like a Marine to take charge of fundraising.

Report of special committees:
Golf tournament has paid all outstanding bills and has raised $11,328.98.
This was our third annual tournament and has been the most successful to date. We will be setting the date at our future meetings for the fourth tournament in the spring.

Unfinished business:
Booth at the Silverado Gun show in Howard County: Information is being worked on by Mike Betts.

New business: Bill Pastino proposed a picnic for Veterans Day to honor Veterans. To use it as a fundraiser. we could have a 50/50 or raffles. It was suggested we do this at Centennial Park. Bill Pastino will work on getting further information for the next meeting. Committee consist of Bill Pastino, DJ, and Joe Roman.
On Labor Day at the VFW, we will be hosting the annual Labor Day cookout. This will be hosted by us. We will purchase the food for this event and cook. Motion on the floor in the amount of $350.00 from our general funds to cover expenses. Motion made by Frank Kippenbrock and seconded by Kevin Oliver. Event starts at 1300. All members and family are invited.

Good of league:
Additional Donation of $50.00 from Florida Marine Dennis Fontecchio for the Scholarship Fund in honor of his son GySgt. Elia Paietta Fontecchio.
Ron Short is sending out raffle tickets for the Marines Helping Marines program. It is asked that if we do not sell them that we would purchase the raffle tickets.
The second, third, and fourth is the Modern Day Marine Expo at Quantico. We will be looking for volunteers.

Raffle for TV: $3.00 for 1, 2 for $5. Five for $10.00. Proceeds will go to the Wounded Marine program.

American Legion of Laurel is seeking information about SSgt Karl G. Taylor. They are trying to set up a day of recognition.
Jack Severn is asking for someone to explain Veterans Day to students of the Model Secondary school for the deaf.
Marine Kippenbrock discussed information regarding the new sign for VFW 8097. Also made a motion to donate $500.00 towards the new sign. Seconded by Marine Oliver. Motion carries.
