June 28, 2005

Meeting called to order at 1934 with 14 Marines on deck. All officers present.

New member David Malkowicz made application, was accepted and initiated into the detachment. Welcome aboard!

Correspondence
2004 scholarship recipient Valerie Cappelaere sent us a note updating us on her activities. She is starting Plebe Week at the USNA next week.

Minutes of the May meeting accepted as published in the detachment newsletter. Paymaster’s report accepted subject to audit.

Sick/In Distress
Marine Harold Mazmanian has been having back problems. Marine Walton is still having severe problems with heart/blood pressure. Marine Blackstone’s son still having health problems.

Officers Reports
Commandant: Announced that detachment member Mike Blum has been named Department of Maryland Marine of the Year. Reminded detachment Marines that anyone may submit material for the newsletter but to do so in a timely manner, i.e., submissions are due the Tuesday following the detachment meeting.
Sr. Vice Commandant: Announced that Marine Kippenbrock is stepping down as newsletter editor and we need someone to step up and assume that duty. Reminded members that we need to get out and canvas for golf tournament sponsors. Also, please notify him by July 11 if you are planning on attending the July 22 8th and Eye Twilight Parade.
Jr. Vice Commandant: Advised that the Pennysaver ad has been placed. Solicited ideas for recruiting new members into the detachment.

Committee Reports
Scholarships: We have 3 applicants under consideration for the 2005 scholarships.
Fundraising: Marine Casey suggested ways to get sponsors for the golf tournament. Marine Kippenbrock spoke about the golf tournament and passed out sponsor packages. Marines Roman and Downer volunteered to run the Wal-Mart hot dog sales in September and October, respectively.
Rifle/Pistol Teams: The results of the Dept. of Pennsylvania 2005 Pistol Match are in.
Toys-for-Tots: NTR
Adopt-A-Highway: Next cleanup is scheduled for 0800 July 30, 2005. Breakfast will follow.
Ball/Cake Cutting: Need a volunteer to organize cake cutting ceremony for detachment.

Old Business
We will supply a working party to our hosts at VFW Post 8097. Marine Kippenbrock will coordinate with the VFW and advise when and what needs to be done.

Good of the League
Some members of the Baltimore Detachment are sponsoring a rifle match at the Marriottsville range on July 24. As of now, this is not a MCL event but will be a good opportunity to sharpen your skills for the Dept. of PA matches in September. Contact Commandant Oliver for further info.

Marine Downer advised that he and his granddaughters will again be selling fruits and vegetables this summer with the proceeds going to the Marines Helping Wounded Marines program. Also, an appraiser from John McDonough Appraisers who was looking at his home noted the MHWM materials in his den, made a $20 contribution on the spot, then followed that up with a company check for $100. Donations were turned over to the Paymaster. Marine Downer also noted that the latest issue of Leatherneck Magazine has an article concerning wounded Marines with many of them mentioned having been contacted by the MHWM program.

Announcements
The Anne Arundel Detachment is sponsoring a trip to Midway Slots on July 31.
The Free State Detachment is sponsoring a Seafood Feast at the DAV in Bowie. Please contact the respective detachments for further information.

November 22, 2005

Meeting called to order at 1930 with 13 Marines on deck. All officers present with the exception of the Jr. Vice Commandant, who was excused.

Minutes from September and October 2005 meetings accepted as published in newsletter. Paymaster’s report accepted subject to audit.

Sick and In Distress: Marine Harold Mazmanian is doing well following surgery. Marine Bob Walton has recovered from his surgery to the point where he was able to attend the reunion of his basic class and visit the construction site of the National Museum of the Marine Corps at Quantico.

Commandant’s Report: Thanked everyone who assisted with and attended the detachment cake cutting at the VFW and the fund-raiser at Ellicott Mills Brewing Company. Reminded Marines to ensure they update mailing and e-mail addresses.
Sr. Vice Commandant: Has returned from successful Marine Band tour.
Jr. Vice Commandant: Excused
Judge Advocate: Reported on fundraiser at Ellicott Mills Brewing Company.

Committee Reports
Fundraising: Marine Bill Pastino reported that the Marine Corps Birthday fundraiser at Ellicott Mills Brewing Company raised $427.00 for the Scholarship Fund. Detachment thanked him and Marine Joe Roman for the successful hot dog sales at the Ellicott City Wal-Mart in September and October. Discussed having similar sales at Dobbin Center Wal-Mart with discussion tabled until we get a response from store management.
Scholarship: The scholarship application form is now available online to obviate mailing costs.
Marine for Life: NTR
Road Clean-up: Marine Saki reported that we have collected 193 bags of trash to date with next clean up scheduled for December 10. 2006 clean-up dates are posted on website.
Toys-for-Tots: Collection boxes have been set up at many Howard County Giant Food stores. Several detachment Marines volunteered to make pick-ups.

New Business: The detachment Christmas party will be held at the home of Marine Kippenbrock on December 10.

Good of the League: The tree-lighting ceremony will take place at National Headquarters on December 15. Funds are still being accepted for Marines Helping Wounded Marines program at Bethesda NNMC and Walter Reed AMC. Marine Band in New Orleans reported okay in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Several detachment Marines reported problems in receiving newsletter online and Marine Rotondo will check into this.
