On May 18, 2023, our detachment attended an award ceremony at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7472. Our own retired United States Marine Corps Colonel Lou Schott had his Bronze Star Medal officially upgraded to a Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action during the Battle of Okinawa on June 20, 1945. Schott’s valorous combat actions reflected credit upon himself and were in keeping within the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. At 102 years old, Scott is the oldest-ranking U.S. Marine Corps officer. The Silver Star is the third-highest military combat decoration that can be awarded to a member of the United States Armed Forces.
