Clarified that associate member Joe Fedorko paid $300 and became a life member in Detachment 1084. As a side note, his wife Sandra is already a life member.

Report of Paymaster:
The Detachment has $6,390.44 in the General Fund. $2,000.41 in the Savings/Scholarship fund.
$972.29 in expenses last year. Our audit is finally complete (thanks Saki & Ed). Just for clarification, a motion was made and passed that any remaining funds from the Veterans Friendly Business will be moved to our Savings/Scholarship account.

Report of any Member/Family Sick or Distressed: A motion was made and passed to hold $500 for any of our members in need.

Fund Raising:
We have Marine roses and are looking at Mission BBQ in Ellicott City on May 31st Memorial Day to pass them out.

Scholarship Committee: We need volunteers to chair this committee. Bill will reach out to Sheila at the Daughters of the American Revolution. They showed an interest in assisting with funds in some way. Still need to reach out to ROTC School Commanders. Ed & Bill will work on some ideas.

Good of the League:
Tim’s flag etiquette presentation is still in the works. Mission BBQ to help with the production. Our officers are working up a syllabus.

Of a cool note: Post 156 is receiving a cannon!
A 4-man Marine Corps League gun crew is being tossed around for ceremonies using the cannon!
Possible display site is Garry W. Hanna Memorial at the church. A detachment ceremonial squad might be interesting if we can get enough members showing interest.

This month’s meeting was held in person at our normal venue, VFW 7472.

Opening Ceremony: 1920 meeting begins. We had a quorum so we had the meeting.

Nominations: Due to the pandemic that resulted in many missed meetings, we were not able to hold three consecutive calls for candidates. For the time being, all elected positions will remain the same.

Minutes of previous meeting: Minutes of SSGT Karl G Taylor last meeting (January 26th 2020) were sent out by email on January 28th and were approved.

Correspondence: Bill received an email from the head of the Howard County Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) responding to his inquiry about joining forces for our Scholarship program. The local chapter isn’t a fund raising charity so they can’t help financially but would like to support the MCL in other ways.

Report of Paymaster: The Detachment has $6,367.35 in the General Fund. $2,000.41 in the Savings/Scholarship fund. $1272.29 in expenses last year. $129.00 will be used from our Benevolent fund to reimburse Bill for flowers [described below].

Report of any Member/Family Sick or Distressed: Bill Brooks has moved to Manchester, MD and is considering changing to the Mt. Airy Detachment.
Lou Schott fell this past month and broke a finger. After a rough night in the hospital, he’s home now and getting better by the day.

Fund Raising: Discussed handing out Marine roses at the Rt-40 Mission BBQ. The VFW is also planning to have a table there as well so Ed will check which day so that we both won’t be there at the same time.
Scholarship committee hasn’t received any applications. Tim had planned to describe the program to the Boy Scouts raising Post 156’s new shed but none of the boys belonged to a JROTC unit. It was decided to try again next year in the hopes we can go to JROTC meetings and present the program in person.

Unfinished Business: Followed through using the Benevolent Fund to assist a fellow Marine, flowers for Mike Blum’s son.

New Business: Discussed recruiting new members and establishing a recreational committee in the hopes of retaining and recruiting new members. We’re struggling to obtain quorums which may be due to meetings that are boring and fairly lengthy so discussed ways to speed this up. Other ideas include day trips like museums, 8th & I and luncheons. We agreed to come up with and discuss other opportunities for camaraderie in the hopes we can solve this.

1. Don’t forget Saturday May 29th we are fundraising at Mission BBQ in Ellicott City.
2. Sunday May 30th The Detachment will be conducting a ceremony in front of the Vietnam Veterans Monument at St John’s Episcopal Church. Try to Be there 1100. There will be a veterans formation. Mike Betts will represent our detachment. Boy Scouts are participating. They will benefit from Mike’s Expert instruction on ringing the ship’s bell. Summer undress uniform if you have it.
3. Monday May 31st at 1215 for a 1230 Start. A small ceremony at Howard County Memorial 1961 WW I, WW II, and Korean War M247 Courthouse Ellicott City MD M248 if you can attend. The idea of a 4-man Marine Corps League gun crew is being tossed around for ceremonies using the cannon! Let Ed know if you have interest in firing the big cannon!

Announcements:
4th of July parade is a go. Make plans to attend. Curt Atkins can carry three in his Jeep for the non-walkers. Looking for a volunteer to be a liaison for our detachment. Let one of our officers know. Guys! Let’s turn this out!

June 22, 2021

1800 we grilled some food and had a nice picnic on the VFW deck. We thank all the family and friends who shared in our fun. Special thanks to Jesus for manning the Grill!

We had no (TC) Tender Hearted Kevin in attendance at this IN PERSON meeting, but we welcomed Shelby from the American Legion and offer a big thank you to Donna for bartending.

Report of Paymaster: Due to unforeseen circumstance, the paymaster’s report is pending distribution. But we took in about $255 in donations giving out Marine Roses at Mission BBQ on Memorial Day Weekend.

I will admit Mike was squared away…until he splashed baked beans on his shirt. Of course I (Curt) was the sensitive guy sticking up for Mike.

Announcements:
4th of July Parade at Pointers Run is a go so make plans to attend. Tim will email the details.
Bring candy to toss. I can walk but four non-walkers can use my Jeep. If it’s not raining, I’ll take the top off.

At the next meeting in July, Jesus said Italian Sausages and his kicked up baked beans will be on the menu along with any special dishes that anyone wants to bring is certainly welcome (like Danny’s Potato Salad that I never got none of, but I ain’t complainin’).

July 27, 2021

1830- Jesus grilled some great food and we enjoyed camaraderie and another nice picnic on the VFW deck. We thank all the family and friends who shared in our fun. Kudos to the cook and to those who brought side dishes. Jesus, the Beans was good and Kevin’s Pasta salad was good. We will continue this format.

Report of Paymaster: All of our required tax forms have been filed. We have a total of $8,623.09. Included in that amount is $165 from our Marine Roses Fund Raiser at Mission BBQ. We have set aside $2000 for Scholarships and $500 for benevolent use.

Report of any Member/Family Sick or Distressed: NTR but we are sad to learn Member Bill Brooks moved out of our area and we wish him well.

Commandant: Bill – glad the installation of officers is done. Picnics continue.
Sr. Vice: We had a nice turn out for the 4th of July parade. We took turns shooting the cannon. A very nice touch was Howard County Police Saluting us veterans as we passed on the final stretch. We were in the front of the veteran’s march and Colonel Hall brought up the rear. We had Marine songs front and back. The other branches was trapped
between us and thanks to Kevin Oliver, we were able to play a few verses of the
Army Song on the bull horn…then we went back to the Marine Hymn.
Jr. Vice: Jesus – an Eye infection caused him to miss the parade.

1. Ed is looking for Volunteers for to be on a list for a 3 man veteran cannon team for events and ceremonies when needed. The cannon team would consist of 1 member from our Detachment, 1 from the VFW, and another from the American Legion. Hopefully, there will be an Old Post Gun Club Team and Howard County Police team as well.
2. Ed is Also looking to establish general mobile radio service (GMRS) radio support teams. This should be handy during veterans’ outings or events as another means of communication.
3. A motion was made and passed to move the $500 from our benevolent fund back to our general fund.
4. August 10th – Stay Tuned for Colonel Schott’s Birthday.

Marker (tribute to the Armed Forces of America) and Movie Night featuring Bastards Road.
Bastards’s Road is a documentary film about Marine Combat Veteran Jon Hancock and his battle with PTSD.

3. Veterans Day Parade will be Sunday November 7th 0830 Arrival with a 0900 start. From

4. November 10th stay tuned. Ed is working on a Veterans Day Gala with a Marine Corp Birthday celebration and cake cutting. More to follow. The Howard County Joint Military Council will meet and work out the details.

Unfinished Business: The Commandant is still looking for a local VSO volunteer if anyone is interested.

New Business:
A motion was made and approved to spend $750 to help a member in need. The paymaster will
attend to the details.

1. We have Troy Justler volunteered to help us produce an American Flag Etiquette video. Mike Buchetti will also lend his expertise if needed.
2. October 30th Flag Retirement at the VFW hosted by the Boy Scout Troops. 0830 with a 1100
Ceremony time. If you can, try to make it.
3. Mike Bechetti – will look into more Detachment Shirts. Stay tuned.
4. Lou Scott Charity Shoot in November. Stay tuned.
5. Someone floated idea of the detachment buying a couple of Red Blazers that members can borrow for special occasions. Let’s get everyone’s thought on this.
6. American Legion members Wanda and Carol’s brother recently passed away. He was a Marine.
