Commandant reported that in the Semper Fi Gung Ho Newsletter he had found that 50 members in the newsletter were not active members, because they have been deceased.
Detachment 1084 needs to immediately review our roster to get and accurate
count of all members status.
Ed had made the suggestion that all members from our meeting tonight receive the latest roster. Each member will be assigned 10 names from the list to confirm their status with Detachment 1084.
MCL dues status also needs to be updated.
Dates of the MCL Convention are for May 6 – 8
Motion was made to spend $125 on a 1 page ad.
We’ll need to talk with Mike Betts on how to go about paying for the Ad.

The 1st order of business for the Joint Military Council will be with Gilchrist Hospice Services
There was a food fight reported between a MD and Delaware detachment. This was over who had brought in the most from the Toys for Tots campaign.
We should look into Paul Rivers to join the Joint Military Council as a Vice Chair.
There is a need to get things organized with VFW 300, 742 and 156. What are these posts assigned to be doing for the MCL in Maryland?

Flag retirement ceremony this Saturday 1/29.
Open to ideas on presenting Flag etiquette.
Ed suggested MCL put on Flag etiquette classes this Saturday.
The Boy Scouts will be attending the ceremony this Saturday and we are looking for 2 or 3 members to explain this topic.
The ceremony begins at 8:30 – 10:30.
Tim had mentioned that the Women’s Auxiliary League will be hosting a Bull Roast on February 26th.
Cost: $50 a ticket.
Later clarification from Tim: The VFW Auxiliary regularly helps the main Post members with the Bull Roast. At least they did the last time the VFW was able to have one…pre-covid.

We have a total of $7248.00 in checking. Of that amount $2,000 is allocated for the Scholarship Fund & $1,000 is allocated for our Benevolent Fund. We have no bills due and no applications for membership. (We haven’t received Mr. Ross’ application yet.) Ed will reach and coordinate with Saki for audit of our finances.

Our Detachment is participating in the Memorial Day Ceremony at the St. John Episcopal Church. Our Commandant Bill Swain will be the Master of Ceremony. There will also be ceremonies at the courthouse and the Columbia lakefront. Stay tuned.

April 9th Deptment of MD meeting on Zoom or post 6. Mike Betts will attend.
American Legion Post 156 Stood up BSU (Brothers Sisters Ukraine) with 100% proceeds going to Ukrainian Freedom fighters. Bill brought up the idea of using current detachment funds to support BSU. After some discussion we had 3 members object. Curt A, Michael & Tim. There was agreement that it would be ok to collect money for BSU as long as people are aware that we are collecting funds for BSU and they are ok with it.
Col. Mike Jackson & Bill Swain (Vice Chair) will be running this and they are working on a nice color flyer for advertisement. We agreed to table this and talk about it some more in April.

We interviewed Austin Terry for a scholarship. He is a SSGT in Athoton High School JROTC. His mom, Lisa, is on the Howard County Veterans Commission. The Scholarship Committee will make the final decision. On a side note, we discussed reaching out and visiting the ROTC schools in lieu of waiting for them to reach out to us.

Scholarship
Ed made a motion to award scholarship to Austin Terry. Any announcement made by the committee that differs can be dealt with at a later time and over ruled by the Commandant. Tim mentioned we have until June 19th for all the applications. Where did this date come from? Nobody is aware of what is being worked on this. Does Kevin have or expect any more applicants? Bill mentioned Austin is the only solid applicant we have at this point.
Ed amended point about Commandant overriding committee but to give award to Austin and deal
with applications that arrive before June 19th. We have the money for another award if an acceptable candidate should apply.
Memorial Day
Saturday – Ellicott City Court House at 1300. The MCL will just be audience members
Sunday – St John’s Episcopal Church at 1030.
Monday – Harriet Tubman at 0745. Undress Blues for flag raising.
Mike Betts reported on the convention in Ocean City. Most of the senior leadership has changed. Marc Fisher has moved on and Paul Gunther is the new District 4 Commandant.

River Hill’s annual Independence Day Parade plans are underway! This year will mark the parade’s twenty-second year, and it will take place on Monday, July 4th, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The parade follows the length of Great Star Drive starting at Pointers Run Elementary School and will end at the River Hill Station professional building at 5005 Signal Bell Lane by the 5th District Volunteer Fire Department. Dignitaries, scout troops,
businesses and groups from the community are invited to join the fun as this year’s parade is expected to be better than ever! Also, again this year to celebrate Independence Day,

scholarship. Discussed combining anticipated restaurant donations which is overtaken by events so would like to close that out. Report approved pending audit.

Mike Zanski (AKA: Z-Man) is acting liaison for the VSOs for Colonel Lou Schott who is at St. Elizabeth’s Nursing and Rehab Center. Lou’s swollen leg has improved significantly. Would enjoy hearing from us.

Scholarship: Check for Austin was sent to Penn State. Kevin would like to step down as Chair, but along with Tim, stay involved with the committee. Jesus to consider stepping up as chair. Next step is to write the rules to consider Detachment family members who may qualify while keeping the decision process transparent and fair for all the applicants.
Made and approved a motion to reimburse Mike for around $400 for lodging during the convention. Still waiting for Mike to produce the receipts.

Fund Raising: Mike Betts discussed the idea of holding a gun raffle. Sell 100 tickets at $100.00/ea. The winner would have to pick up the gun at the retail store so all Maryland laws would be covered during this step. Discussed what type of gun to raffle (AR-15, hunting, pistol, etc) so that is TBD right now but Mike will be working this.

Opening Ceremony: 1909 on time start. Meeting took place at the VFW.

The Commandant suspended the meeting for 10 minutes and we had a presentation via phone with Evelyn Darden from the Law Offices of Addison Darden. Report of Paymaster: $5,618.24 total in account (included in that amount is $2000.00 for the Scholarship fund and $3300 in savings. This amount is changing because we have funds coming in via PayPal on our M1 Carbine raffle.

Veterans Days Parade – 13 November 0730 in Columbia at Whole Foods will be a parade staff meeting. At 0900, the parade starts. After the parade there will be a ceremony; please try to stay for that as well.
Fundraising – Auction of an WW2 M1 Carbine from Bill Shawley Collectibles is on! Copy a flyer, pass and spread the word raffle will be drawn using a vanity number generator as soon as we sell all 300 tickets.
Toys 4 Tots – Jesus is taking the lead stay tuned.

1.Kevin Oliver will be hosting a Birthday Shoot at the Marriottsville Range on 10 November with bourbon afterwards… like the old days. Kevin did you say it was Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon you were bringing?
2. A motion was file and approved for up to $300 MCL department meeting food and refreshments.
3. A motion was filed and approved for up to $200 for our birthday celebration cake & supplies.
Good of the League:
November 11th our birthday celebration & veterans gala which will be at the Sykesville Station Restaurant and Bar – Bar & Grill in Sykesville, MD…stay tuned. Cost is $35-45 dollars, approximately. Mike Blum will be the narrator; Kevin will handle the cake.
On Saturday the 19th, we are hosting MCL Dept of MD Quarterly meeting. We will also hold our Detachment November meeting at the same time and there will be no December meeting.
Jesus & son will be volunteering with the Special Olympics.
