1930 meeting begins – We had Quorum. Meeting took place at the VFW

Due to Tim Moving out of the area, Tim Paulin stepped down and Mike Betts was sworn in as Jr. Vice Commandant.

Report of Paymaster:
We have a total $5,350.01 which includes: $250 for our Benevolent fund and $2,001.29 for scholarships.

Col. Lou Schott called in and is doing well as can be. We wish him well.
Dennis is home and we wish him well as well. Thanks Jon for doing extra duty by picking him up many times and taking him to the VA.

Report of Officers:
Commandant: Bill – Not only our detachment, but we all all want to work at patronizing our VFW in 2023. The doors are open guys!
Sr. Vice – Not in attendance.
Jr. Vice – We hosted the Department of MD meeting in December.

Fund Raising – M1 Carbine raffle needs work on all our parts. We have only sold 27 out of 300 raffle ticket. $40 a ticket. Come on guys.
We will be selling raffle tickets at the Belair Gun Show at the Belair Armory February 3, 4 & 5th. We need volunteers. Please email Mike Betts to volunteer your time.

Mark Your Calendars! The 78th Reunion of The Battle For Iwo Jima will be held from 16 – 18 February, 2023 at the Crystal City Hilton Hotel (recently renamed to the Hilton Arlington National Landing) in Arlington, Virginia, just a couple of miles from Reagan National Airport.

Scholarship Committee – Need to update the scholarship paperwork from Saki.
Jesus will be speaking to his son’s school counselor to put MCL on the scholarship list.
Need to find more ways to get the word out about the Scholarship Fund.
Discussed creating a criterion so MCL children can also apply.
Looking at high schools with ROTC programs and to attempting reach out to get the scholarship for military families
Accept Active Duty marines or Veterans who have sons and daughters in ROTC for scholarship.
Need to get all scholarship information completed by the March meeting.
Discussed how much to award the scholarship awardee ($1,000 or $2,000)
Discussed if there should be one or two scholarships available.
Ed wants to have 2 scholarship awards.
Jesus wants to have 2 scholarship awards at $1,000 each.
Fundraising Committee – There will be an antique firearms show at Timonium fairgrounds on March 18th and 19th. An email will be sent asking for volunteers, and asking that you include what day and time will work best for you to help.

Receipt from a Marine who attended Marine Corps Ball.
Marine attended the ball with his girlfriend. Ed suggested that MCL can cover the cost of the Marine.

Plan ahead to get estimates for the cost of the Marine Corps Birthday cake.

Ed wants Senator Chris Van Hollen to award Col. Lou the Silver Star Medal.

Announcements –
MCL Det. 1084 is not in good standing with the state of Maryland.

Minutes of the March 28th, 2023 meeting, SSgt. Karl G Taylor, Sr. Detachment, Marine Corps League.
– Meeting called to order at 1912.
– Judge Advocate not present.
– Minutes from the previous meeting accepted via voice vote. Motion made by Kevin Oliver, seconded by Mike Betts.
– No Marine is sick or distressed.

Paymaster Report: $4780.03 in checking account

Officer’s Reports:
– Commandant–Dept. of Maryland convention upcoming in May. Anyone that wants to attend is encouraged to do so.

Scholarship Committee:
– Committee Chairman Jesus Tapia has made contact with HoCo high schools.
– Jesus and assist chair Kevin Oliver will meet to finalize eligibility criteria.
– Ed Hall brought up the idea of including Boy’s State.

Fundraising Committee:
– M1 Carbine raffle is coming along. Several Marines manned a booth at a gun show, 3 tickets were sold.
– So far 102 tickets have been sold, for a total of $4080.
– More members are needed to help sell tickets.
– The idea to limit ticket sales to 200 total was debated.

– The Department requests that Detachment purchase an ad for the convention book.

2023-24 Officer Nominations:
– Commandant–Mike Betts was nominated and he accepted.
– Sr. Vice Commandant–Kevin Oliver was nominated and he accepted.
– Jr. Vice Commandant–Larry Gourdine was nominated and he accepted.
– Judge Advocate–Jesus Tapia was nomimated and he accepted.
– Nominations were closed until next meeting.

Good of the League:
– HoCo will be holding a Vietnam Veteran’s Day ceremony. All are encouraged to attend.
– A penciled date of Sunday, 21 May is on the VFW calendar for a MCL Family picnic afternoon. (An Alternate date is 7th May). Please respond with preference, intention to attend & regrets for a head count.

From $200 to $100.00 – 85 years of age and higher (a decrease)

Fund Raising – M1 Carbine raffle as of last meeting we raised a total of $4080 and it was agreed to reduce the tickets to 300 from 200 so we have 98 tickets remaining. We all need to push this.
The Scholarships Committee met and revised our Scholarship criteria. Jesus will send out an email to all members of the changes.
Website. Bill brought up the idea of revamping our website.

New Business: Detachment Picnic. We voted on Saturday, June 3rd, 1300, hours for our annual picnic. Sunday, June 4th will be our backup date.
Tentative VFW is the place (any changes will be passed along). We voted and approved $400 for drinks & alcohol. $200 for meat & potluck for everything else (we all bring a little something and we all have fun).

Report of any Member/Family Sick or Distressed: Colonel Schott is out of the hospital and back in his room. Prayers for this 102-year-old devil dog! He is doing better just taking small steps at a time. Still unable to take calls.

Report of Officers:
Commandant: Bill – Thanks to all of the detachment who attended Colonel Schott’s Silver Star ceremony. We had a couple of frustrating technological hiccups, but it went fine. Department of MD Commandant Joe Fay and his Adjutant Gerald George attended. There was concern on the proper wear of the red blazer. Bill Swain took the lead to follow up on this topic.

1. Mike Attended the Marine Corps League Convention and represented the detachment. We have a streamer to add to our flag. Sold a few raffle tickets.
2. Mike also sold a few more raffle tickets at the Carroll County Veterans Celebration.

Report of Special Committees: On the 4th Of July, the Howard County Joint Military Council will again host the Parade. We are participating. Col. Hall will keep us
posted on the details.
Following the 4th of July Parade, at 1700 hours Col. Hall and his wife will open their home to our detachment along with post 156. Spouses are welcome. Mrs. Hall is an outstanding Host.
Post 156 will conduct a Change of Command Ceremony. We are invited to do one as well.

Unfinished Business: NTR

New Business: Saturday June 3rd, 1300, is our annual picnic. It will be at the VFW on the back deck. We already approved $400 for alcohol and other drinks. $200 for meat and potluck for everything else. Please let Mr. Oliver know what you are bringing. We also could use a few popup canopies to set up on the deck.

For all events, the Uniform of the Day will be the MCL Undress uniform if you have it. If you don’t have it, wear your red cover.

Saturday May 27th – The VFW Post 7472 is hosting a ceremony at the Old Ellicott City Courthouse, 3725 Park Avenue. Start time 12:30pm. This is not a Marine Corps League event but attend if you can.

Sunday, 28 May, 12:00pm. Please arrive around 11:15 – 11:30 to assist as needed.
